Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Chilliwack.

Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on March 20, 2020 at approximately 5:45 p.m., police responded to a serious public safety call involving two individuals in a store in the 45000 block of Yale Road.  While evacuating the area, an uninvolved male, the affected person in this case, was arrested. It is alleged he failed to leave the area when directed by police. During the course of the arrest, the male suffered serious but not life-threatening injury.

The reported serious public safety call turned out to be unfounded.

The IIO is asking for any person who saw, heard or recorded the incident to contact the IIO Witness Line toll free at 1-855-446-8477.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
