Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Chilliwack.

Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on March 11, 2021, police responded to a report of a man with a weapon in the area of Landing Drive and Wellington Avenue. When officers arrived, the man went inside his residence on Landing Drive before reportedly exiting again voluntarily at approximately 12:00 p.m. While the man was being taken into custody, an interaction occurred.

At some point during the day, the man sustained injuries. The IIO will investigate to determine what role, if any, police actions or inaction may have played in the man’s injuries.

Emergency Health Services were called and transported the man to a hospital for treatment.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
