Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Coquitlam.
Information provided by Forensic Services Officers at a facility in Coquitlam indicates that on January 20, 2021 at approximately 11:20 p.m., officers were called to assist with a distressed male patient, and the interaction resulted in the male sustaining injuries.
On January 21, the man was transported to hospital when facility staff became aware that he may have sustained serious injury. The IIO was notified on January 22 and an investigation was commenced.
The Forensic Services Officers at the facility are designated as Special Provincial Constables while on duty, and therefore under the provisions of the Police Act, the incident falls within the IIO mandate to investigate.
Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
