Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Kitimat where one person sustained a serious harm.

Information provided by the RCMP states that shortly after 5:00 a.m. on January 13, 2023, police responded to a report of an alleged theft at a business in the 200-block of City Centre. A man officers believed to be a suspect in the theft was located nearby, and it is reported that he attempted to leave the area but was injured.

Emergency Health Services attended, and the man was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The IIO has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions may have played in the man’s injury.

Background

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
