Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in New Westminster.
Information provided by the New Westminster Police Department indicates that on March 9, 2021 at approximately 8:15 p.m., police responded to a reported disturbance at a residence in the 1200-block of Quayside Drive. When officers arrived, a man and a woman were found at the location. The man was placed under arrest and while being taken into custody, an interaction reportedly occurred which resulted in the man sustaining serious injury.
Emergency Health Services were called and transported the man to the hospital for treatment.

Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
