Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has reopened an investigation into an incident in Surrey.

On July 25, 2016 at approximately 10:05 p.m., during the course of an alleged impaired driving investigation, an interaction occurred between a man and two police officers which resulted in the man sustaining injuries. The allegations of impaired driving were not substantiated.

The matter was later reported to the IIO on September 5, 2017. At that time, available medical information indicated that the injuries did not meet the threshold for serious harm required for an IIO investigation to proceed, as defined by the Police Act.

On November 5, 2020, the IIO received new information regarding the seriousness of the injuries sustained by the affected person. The Chief Civilian Director has therefore determined that further investigation is warranted, and the matter will be re-examined.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
