Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Vancouver.
Information provided by the Vancouver Police Department indicates that on September 5, 2021 at approximately 12:15 p.m., police responded to a reported crime in progress at a business in the 1600-block of West 4th Avenue. When officers arrived, an altercation occurred before the affected person, a man, was arrested. Shortly thereafter, the man went into medical distress, and assistance was provided until Emergency Health Services arrived and transported the affected person to a local hospital for treatment.
The IIO was advised of the incident shortly after it occurred and has commenced an investigation into the incident.

Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
