Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Vancouver.
Information provided by the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) indicates that on October 11, 2021 at approximately 2:40 p.m., police arrested a man regarding a breach of conditions. The man was taken to VPD detachment cells shortly thereafter.
At approximately 4:40 p.m., the man was found unconscious in his cell. Medical assistance was provided, and Emergency Health Services transported the man to a local area hospital.
The IIO has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, officers may have played in the man’s condition.
Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
