Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Vancouver that resulted in one man sustaining serious injuries.

Information provided by the Vancouver Police Department states that at about 4:15 p.m. on April 30, 2023, a man was arrested and lodged in the Vancouver Police Department jail.

It is reported that at about 8:25 a.m. the following morning (May 1), the man was found to be in medical distress in his cell. Emergency Health Services attended and transported the man to a hospital for treatment.

The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and has commenced an investigation. Initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details of what occurred during the arrest and while the man was in cells, in addition to the cause of the man’s distress.

Background

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
