Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Williams Lake.
Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on May 31, 2020 at approximately 7:00 p.m., officers allege they responded to reports of a man believed to be in significant emotional distress and intoxication who, once located, fled from police on a motorbike. Officers searched the area and located the man, who reportedly refused to engage and fled police on the motorbike. Police followed and there was an interaction between the police vehicle and the motorbike near Desous Road, at which point the man was taken into custody.
Once in custody, officers provided first aid until Emergency Health Services arrived and transported the man to the hospital where he was found to be suffering from serious but not life-threatening injury.

Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
