Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident near Ladysmith.

Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on April 17, 2021 just after midnight, police attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a white minivan in the 100-block of Highway 1. The driver of the vehicle, a man, reportedly did not stop.

Police vehicles were used to bring the van to a stop and the man was removed from the vehicle. A police service dog was used to assist in taking him into custody.

The man sustained a serious dog bite injury and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
