Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident on Salt Spring Island.

Information reported by the RCMP states that at about 3:35 p.m. on April 2, 2022, police responded to the scene of a single vehicle collision in the 200-block of Stewart Road and were reportedly told that the male driver had fled on foot.

Officers subsequently located the driver in the 400-block of Cusheon Lake Road where he was arrested.

The man sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries at some time during the day.

The IIO has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions may have played in the injuries.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
