Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is investigating the arrest of a man that occurred in Prince George on August 11, 2026.
Preliminary information states that shortly after 3:30 p.m., a man was driving a commercial truck southbound on Highway 97 near Bear Lake.
A Prince George RCMP officer conducted a traffic stop on the truck. There was an interaction between the officer and the man driving while the vehicle was pulled over, including the officer deploying a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW). The man suffered injuries while being arrested.
The IIO was notified about the incident by the affected person the following day and commenced an investigation.
There are two factors that the IIO considers at the beginning of each investigation:
- If there has been an injury that meets the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act, or a death; and
- If there is a connection between the serious harm/death and police action or inaction.
If both conditions are met, the investigation will continue to examine all available evidence to determine what occurred. At the conclusion of the investigation, the chief civilian director will consider whether there are reasonable grounds to believe that an offence may have occurred.
