Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) has concluded its investigation into the arrest of a man in Vancouver that occurred on the morning of August 20, 2026.
Vancouver Police Department officers initially responded to a 911 call about a man breaking into a boat moored at a marina near at the north end of Granville Island. VPD officers arrived around 9:30 a.m. and located one man.
Police used less-lethal impact range weapons while arresting the man and taking him into custody. He was then taken to a hospital for assessment and treatment.
The IIO was notified shortly after the incident occurred and commenced an investigation. Upon review of the medical evidence collected by IIO investigations, the chief civilian director has determined that the man’s injuries do not meet the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act.
The IIO investigation is now concluded.
Background
The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
