IIO is Seeking Witnesses to a March 2023 Incident in Surrey (2024-194)

Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is seeking witnesses to a motor vehicle incident that occurred on March 30, 2023 in Surrey.

Information provided by the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU) states that at around 10 p.m., a vehicle driven by an RCMP officer, accompanied by a member of a municipal police department, observed a Ford U-Haul pickup truck near 80 Avenue and Harvie Road.

A short time later, police came across the U-Haul pickup truck which had been involved in a collision with three other vehicles on 80 Avenue near 176 Street, a white 2020 Land Rover sedan, a white 2016 Kia Forte sedan and a black 2006 Hummer H3.

The driver of the Kia sustained serious injuries in the collision.

The IIO would like to speak with anyone who witnessed the incident or the U-Haul pickup truck and police vehicles leading up to the collision.

The IIO was notified of the incident on August 16, 2024 and has now commenced an investigation. Initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details of the police account as well as whether any action or inaction on the part of the officers played a role in the collision.

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
