Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is seeking witnesses to an incident in Surrey that occurred on May 23, 2024.
At approximately 12:30 a.m., members of the Surrey Police Service, Surrey RCMP and Delta Police Department engaged in a traffic stop after a reported violation near 144 Street and 82A Avenue.
Officers subsequently moved to arrest the man driving the vehicle. There was an interaction, and the man was arrested, suffering an injury in the process.
The man subsequently self-reported the incident to the IIO on May 27, 2024.
Investigators are asking anyone who saw the man’s arrest and interaction with police, or witnessed the traffic stop to call the IIO.
The IIO commenced an investigation immediately and is seeking to confirm the details of the interaction with police, as well as whether any force used was necessary, proportionate, and reasonable under the circumstances.

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
