Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an incident in Nelson.
Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on November 18, 2020 at approximately 5:20 p.m., an officer responded to a complaint regarding the behaviour of a man at a residence in the 1400-block of Ash Street. Upon arrival, the officer reportedly found the man sitting outside the home and attempted to arrest him. There was a struggle before the man was successfully taken into custody.
At some point during the events that evening, the man sustained serious injuries. He was taken by police to a local hospital for treatment. The IIO will investigate to determine what role, if any, police may have played in the injuries.

Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
