Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is seeking witnesses to the arrest of a man in North Vancouver that occurred on August 10, 2026.
Preliminary information provided by the North Vancouver RCMP states that around 8 p.m., officers responded to Lonsdale Quay to assist BC Emergency Health Services paramedics with a medical call.
Police arrived and the man who was the subject of the medical call climbed onto a police vehicle.
The man was later taken into custody and taken to the hospital for assessment and treatment.
The incident was not initially reported to the IIO as it was believed the man had suffered only minor injuries.
However, the IIO has now received information that some of the injuries the man sustained may be more serious in nature and has started an investigation.
The IIO is aware multiple people may have recorded the incident and are in possession of video footage. Investigators would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or who has video footage.
Specifically, investigators would also like to speak to the occupants of a grey Tesla Model Y that was nearby at the time. They are asking those people to please contact the IIO.
There are two factors that the IIO considers at the beginning of each investigation:
- If there has been an injury that meets the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act, or a death; and
- If there is a connection between the serious harm/death and police action or inaction.
If both conditions are met, the investigation will continue to examine all available evidence to determine what occurred. At the conclusion of the investigation, the chief civilian director will consider whether there are reasonable grounds to believe that an offence may have occurred.
