Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is providing an update regarding its investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred on June 8, 2026 (IIO 2026-127).

Around 9 p.m., Vancouver Police Department (VPD) officers responded to calls about a man running through residential backyards in the 3600-block of Commercial Street.

Police arrived on scene and located the man who was the subject of calls to police. The man had entered a residence and taken an uninvolved man as a hostage using a weapon. There was subsequently an interaction, and the AP was shot by police.

The IIO was notified shortly after the incident and commenced an investigation, which remains ongoing.

The AP was pronounced deceased at the scene. The hostage was taken to a local hospital with injuries but has since been released.

To date, the IIO has carried out canvassing, conducted interviews and collected evidence, including video footage.

Investigators continue to analyze video and forensic evidence and also expect to conduct further interviews.

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of officers and detention guards in British Columbia. It investigates all incidents involving officers or detention guards that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
