Surrey – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. was notified of a police-involved incident in New Westminster on January 13, 2020.
New Westminster Police reported that a male was arrested for intoxication on the afternoon of January 13, 2020 and taken into custody. While being detained in cells it was reported he fell.
Emergency Health Services were called, and the male was taken to hospital and it was determined he had serious injuries.
The IIO has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, the officers’ actions or inaction may have played into the serious harm of the male.
Background:
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
