Surrey. B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been notified of a police-involved motor vehicle incident in West Kelowna.

RCMP reported that on September 23, 2019 shortly after 6:00 p.m., an officer in a marked police car attempted to make a traffic stop as a vehicle travelled onto the Bennett Bridge towards West Kelowna. The male driver of the vehicle failed to stop and exited onto Highway 97.

Shortly after, the vehicle was involved in a collision with three other vehicles. The male driver was transported to hospital with serious injuries.

The IIO has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, the officers’ actions or inaction may have played into the serious harm of the male.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
