Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is providing an update regarding its investigation into the arrest of a man in Port Coquitlam on November 20, 2025 (IIO 2025-270).

Around 6:30 a.m., RCMP officers responded to a report of an assault at a residence in the 1800 block of Coquitlam Avenue.

Upon arriving, police located a man and woman inside a home. Officers attempted to arrest the man, resulting in an interaction between him and police.

After he was detained, the man went into medical distress. Paramedics provided aid at the scene before BC Emergency Health Services took the man by ambulance to a hospital in serious condition.

The IIO was notified about the incident on November 27, 2025, and commenced an investigation.

The IIO investigation remains ongoing. Investigators continue to gather evidence, including additional medical reports, which will be reviewed and analyzed once received.

To date, the IIO has conducted interviews, canvassed the area for evidence and witnesses, and collected and reviewed statements. Investigators have also determined the number of involved police officers.

Additional interviews are expected as the investigation progresses.
