For Immediate Release

Surrey, B.C. – The Chief Civilian Director (CCD) of the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has concluded an investigation into an officer-involved shooting incident in Langley.

As indicated in the previous release, on October 7, 2020 at approximately 6:20 p.m., Delta Police Department officers in the area of 200 Street and 24 Avenue in Langley were conducting an investigation in relation to a prior incident in Delta. When officers attempted to arrest two men, an interaction occurred, and shots were fired by police. Both men sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The CCD has reviewed the available evidence and determined that there are no reasonable grounds to believe that any officer has committed an offence. Accordingly, the matter will not be referred to Crown Counsel for consideration of charges.

The investigation concluded in May 2021, but due to concurrent court proceedings related to the incident, the IIO did not report publicly on the decision at that time in hopes the court proceedings may be concluded in the near future. Given the matter remains before the courts, the IIO will not comment further at this time.

The IIO’s public report into the incident will be released on the IIO website once the court proceedings have concluded.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
