Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has now completed its investigation into an incident in Lumby (IIO 2024-097).

In December 2023, the Lumby and Vernon RCMP detachments received reports reflecting concern for the safety of a woman.

On April 14, 2024, the woman who was the subject of those reports was found deceased. Further details are not being released at this time due to ongoing court proceedings.

The IIO was notified of the prior reports and death on April 25, 2024, and commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, police action or inaction may have played in the death.

The Interim Chief Civilian Director has reviewed the evidence and determined that there are no reasonable grounds to believe that a criminal offence was committed by any officer.

The IIO investigation is now concluded, and a public report will be published following conclusion of concurrent criminal court proceedings.

Background

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
