Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia is seeking witnesses to an August 5, 2023 police-involved shooting incident that occurred in Clinton Park in Vancouver that resulted in the death of an 18-year-old man (IIO 2023-235).
At about 2:15 a.m. on August 5, Vancouver Police Department officers responded to calls reporting sounds of gunfire in Clinton Park. Upon arrival at the park, police located an 18-year-old and shots were fired. The 18-year-old sustained a fatal gunshot injury and died in hospital a short time later.
The IIO is asking anyone who saw the interaction in Clinton Park, or who has an audio recording, or video or dashcam footage of the incident to please contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website. Incident Summary
Information provided by the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) states that at approximately 2:15 a.m. August 5, 2023, the VPD received reports of sounds of gunfire in Clinton Park, near Grant and Penticton Streets.
Officers located a young man in the park. Shots were fired, and he was shot by police. He was transported to hospital, where he died.
The IIO is investigating to determine what role police played in the man’s death, as well as who fired shots, how many shots were fired, what weapon if any the affected person may have had, and all other details of the incident.

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
