IIO Seeks Witnesses to Incident in Powell River

SURREY – The Independent Investigations Office of BC has assumed jurisdiction for investigating an incident involving the Powell River RCMP.
On July 26, 2014, RCMP officers were conducting routine foot patrols at the Powell River Sea Fair.
At approximately 10:30 p.m., officers observed an adult male who was reportedly in breach of his court-ordered curfew and other conditions.
Officers approached the male and arrested him for the breach. As the male was being escorted to a police vehicle, he fled the scene and ran west towards the waterfront and then proceeded over an embankment. Officers followed the male and eventually located him on the beach.
The affected person was arrested and taken into custody. On July 27, after complaining of injuries, the affected person was taken to the hospital where he received medical treatment for various facial injuries.
The IIO was notified and have assigned investigators to the case. The Powell River RCMP remain responsible for any and all concurrent investigations into the actions of the affected person.

As set by the Chief Civilian Director, the IIO’s goals are to conduct fair, unbiased, timely, thorough and competent investigations, and ensure transparency through public reporting.
Due to the preliminary stage of the investigation, no additional information is available at the present time.
