New Investigations – Jurisdiction Sustained
Shortly before 5:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 15, RCMP officers in Nanaimo arrested an adult male and transported him to the cell block at the Nanaimo RCMP Detachment. During the process of booking him into a cell, a physical altercation between the male and police officers took place. The male sustained facial injuries during the incident and was transported to hospital for treatment.
Shortly after 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 15, RCMP officers in Kamloops attended Royal Inland Hospital in response to a report of an 18 year-old male threatening to jump from a parking structure. Officers located the youth and verbally engaged him. At some point, a physical altercation ensued. The youth broke free from the officers and jumped from the parking structure. He sustained serious injuries and was immediately hospitalized. He later died in hospital as a result of his injuries.
Shortly before 12:00 p.m. on Monday, June 23, officers from the Vancouver Police Department observed two individuals reportedly acting suspicious near a residence. During the encounter with police, the male affected person sustained dog bite injuries. He was taken into custody and was transported to hospital for treatment.
In all three cases, jurisdiction was asserted and sustained. The investigations are on-going.
Report to Crown Counsel
The Chief Civilian has made a report to Crown Counsel after reviewing the investigation into an incident that occurred in Surrey on Dec. 28, 2013.

Civilian Monitor Appointed
The IIO has appointed a Civilian Monitor to conduct an administrative review of the IIO’s investigation into the Sept. 10, 2012 death of Mr. Gregory Matters.
