IIO Update to Incident in Burnaby

Surrey — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) has released the scene of the fatal critical incident that took place yesterday near Joffre and South East Marine Drive in Burnaby.

At approximately 4 p.m., on August 13, 2015, the IIO was notified of an incident involving a male affected person and multiple members of the Vancouver Police Department (VPD).

According to the VPD, at approximately 2:30 p.m. officers responded to a complaint of a male causing a disturbance. Officers subsequently located the male in the backyard of a residential property.  Officers attempted to take the affected person into custody however the situation became significantly physical. During the altercation, the affected person received injuries and did not survive. Several police officers were also injured.

IIO investigators were at the scene by 4:32 p.m. and remained there until late into the evening. The next of kin notification is now complete, and the IIO will continue to provide support to the family.

Preliminary investigative tasks include designating both subject and witness officers; neighbourhood canvassing; establishing the identities of any other witnesses and locating any video that may be relevant to the investigation.

The VPD are working with the IIO as per the Memorandum of Understanding and remain responsible for any comments related to the involved officers.

The BC Coroners Service has jurisdiction over any and all information related to the deceased.
