IIO Investigators Deployed to Critical Incident in Burnaby

Surrey — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) confirms that it is investigating a critical incident involving the Vancouver Police Department (VPD).

According to the VPD, at approximately 2:30 p.m. officers responded to a complaint of a male causing disturbance in South East Vancouver. The officers engaged the affected person and a struggle ensued near Marine Drive and Joffre in Burnaby. Medical assistance was rendered at the scene, however the affected person did not survive his injuries.The IIO was immediately notified and investigators are on site processing the scene. As set out by the Chief Civilian Director, the IIO’s goals are to conduct fair, unbiased, timely, thorough, and competent investigations and ensure transparency through public reporting.

The BC Coroners Service has jurisdiction over any and all information related to the deceased. Due to the preliminary stage of the IIO investigation, no additional information is available at the present time.
