Independent Investigations Office
For Immediate Release

Surrey – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is continuing its investigation into a fatal incident in Mill Bay on Vancouver Island.

Initial information provided to the IIO by the RCMP suggested that on June 17, 2018, at approximately 2:15 a.m., an incident occurred involving a number of vehicles, including a motorcycle and a Corvette, travelling northbound on the Trans-Canada Highway just south of the Cobble Hill Road and Cowichan Bay Road intersection.

That information also suggests the next vehicle to arrive was operated by an off-duty police officer of the Victoria Police Department. That officer came upon a debris field located in the roadway and was neither the driver nor the rider in the initial crash.

Another unidentified vehicle is believed to have travelled past the incident shortly thereafter. Anybody with information that could assist in locating that vehicle or driver is asked to contact the South Vancouver Island Traffic services at 250-416-0352.

The RCMP is conducting a concurrent investigation into alleged motor vehicle offences by the civilians involved in this incident. The IIO investigation is focused on the actions of the off-duty police officer.

Any potential witnesses are asked to call the IIO at 1-855-446-8477.

Background
