IIO Deploys to Fatal Motor Vehicle Incident in Mill Bay (2018-072)

Surrey – The Independent Investigations Office of BC has deployed investigators to a fatal motor vehicle incident in Mill Bay on Vancouver Island.

Initial information provided to the IIO by the RCMP suggests that on June 17, 2018, at approximately 2:15 a.m., an incident occurred involving a number of vehicles, including a motorcycle, travelling northbound on the Trans-Canada Highway just south of the Cobble Hill Road and Cowichan Bay Road intersection.

One of the vehicles was operated by an off-duty police officer of the Victoria Police Department.

Emergency Health Services was immediately called to attend, however the male rider of the motorcycle did not survive his injuries. The IIO will not be releasing the names of any of the individuals involved in this incident.

The RCMP is conducting a concurrent investigation into alleged motor vehicle offences by the civilians involved in this incident.

The IIO investigation is focused on the actions of the off-duty police officer.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents, whether on or off-duty, that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
