Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is providing an update to an investigation into a May incident and arrest in Vancouver where one man was injured (2025-132).

Around 10:50 a.m. on May 28, 2025, members of the Vancouver Police Department responded to a report of a man who had been brandishing a weapon in a common area of a residential building in the 0 block of West Hastings Street.

When police arrived, they were told the man was inside a residential unit, and members of the Emergency Response Team were called to assist.

Some time later, the man was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The IIO was notified of the incident the same day it occurred and commenced an investigation.

The IIO has since confirmed that the man’s injuries meet the definition of serious harm as defined in Part 11 of the Police Act. The IIO can also confirm the affected person was in possession of an air-powered pellet gun closely resembling a firearm.

To date, the investigation remains ongoing. Investigators continue to conduct interviews and analyze forensic evidence, reports, and other materials to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of officers and detention guards in British Columbia. It investigates all incidents involving officers or detention guards that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
