For Immediate Release

SURREY – The Independent Investigations Office of BC is seeking witnesses to an officer involved shooting that occurred yesterday near the 6100 block of 14th Avenue in Burnaby.

On March 29, 2015, at approximately 5:50 a.m., RCMP officers responded to a report of a double stabbing at a residence. Upon arrival, officers came into contact with several individuals. During that contact, an adult male (the affected person) was shot by an officer. The affected person was taken into custody and transported for medical care. He subsequently died while at hospital.

The cause of death (and manner of death) remains under investigation by the BC Coroners Service.

IIO investigators were at the scene yesterday conducting preliminary investigative activities. Potential witnesses were identified and a neighbourhood canvass was completed. All of this work is being done in cooperation with the RCMP, IHIT and the BC Coroners Service.

This is the 11th officer involved shooting under investigation by the IIO since April 1, 2014 and the third incident in Burnaby this month.  Witnesses to this and any other critical incident under investigation by the IIO are asked to call 1-855-446-8477.
