Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. confirms that the affected person, a male, involved in an incident in Prince George, has died.
As stated in our previous release, the RCMP reported that on April 12, 2020 at approximately 4:30 a.m., officers responded to an alarm from a sporting goods store in the 1400 block of 3rd Avenue which is known to sell firearms and ammunition. Following several hours of negotiation, the male was apprehended by police, medically cleared at the hospital and taken to the Prince George RCMP detachment cells. Hours later while still in custody, the male went into medical distress and was transported back to the hospital where he was found to be suffering serious injury.
On April 20, 2020, the IIO was notified that the male had died in hospital. IIO personnel have been in contact with the family and the investigation into the incident continues.
Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
