Surrey. B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been notified of a police-involved incident in Kelowna.
RCMP reported that at 12.09 a.m. on December 22, 2019, an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop. When the vehicle failed to stop, the officer followed the vehicle into a dead end street. An interaction occurred between the driver and the officer that led to shots being fired by police.
A short time later, police received information that a male with injuries had been admitted to hospital.
The IIO has commenced an investigation. Anyone who witnessed this incident is asked to contact the IIO witness line at 1-855-446-8477.
Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
