Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is seeking a key witness to an incident in Campbell River.
On March 28, 2020 shortly before 4:00am, officers were responding to a call near the 2100 block of South Island Highway in Campbell River. In the course of the officers’ investigation, a civilian vehicle on the Island Highway collided with the center median and subsequently struck a tree. The passenger of the vehicle suffered serious injuries and later passed away in hospital.
The IIO has received information that an individual commented on the Facebook account of the Campbell River Mirror that they had observed the incident currently under investigation. The IIO is asking for this witness and any others who may have seen, heard, or recorded the incident to contact the IIO Witness Line toll free at 1-855-446-8477.
Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
