Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has concluded an investigation into a death in Nanaimo
As detailed in our previous release, at about 11:25 a.m. on April 2, 2022, members of the RCMP responded to a call from a man concerned for his own wellbeing. When officers arrived, the man was entering a vehicle driven by a third party to go to the hospital.
Independent witnesses confirm that the man left his home and went to the hospital. There was no further contact with police.
The following day, April 3, the man was found deceased by means that appear to be self-inflicted.
The Chief Civilian Director has reviewed the evidence, including medical records and civilian witness statements, and determined that the actions of the officer were appropriate and did not contribute to the man’s tragic death. The IIO investigation is now concluded. The BC Coroners Service’s independent investigation into the man’s death continues.
Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
