Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has concluded investigation 2022-049 into a death in Victoria.
On March 24, 2022, members of the Victoria Police Department responded to a request to check the wellness of a woman and child.
Later the same day, the woman called Emergency Health Services regarding her child. Both mother and child were transported to the hospital, however the infant was later pronounced deceased.
The IIO has reviewed all available evidence, and determined there is no connection between the actions or inaction of police and the subsequent death of the child.
The Victoria Police Department is currently conducting investigations related to the death.
The IIO investigation is now concluded.
Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
