Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC concludes investigation into a motor vehicle incident in West Vancouver.

As indicated in the previous release, on July 18, 2021, officers from the Fraser Coast Integrated Road Safety Unit were conducting speed checks in the Cypress Bowl area eastbound on Highway 1. According to independent witnesses, drivers steadily slowed their vehicles in the area upon spotting the police presence. Police were located on the shoulder with adequate space to conduct road checks safely.

Witnesses report that a black Ford F150 was gradually decreasing speed in alignment with the flow of traffic when a Harley Davidson motorcycle collided with the back of the truck.

Police provided medical assistance until Emergency Health Services arrived to transport the woman to the hospital for treatment.

The CCD has reviewed the evidence and determined that the actions of police were not responsible for the collision. The truck decreased speed slowly as is usual upon observing a speed check, and the female motorcyclist did not slow correspondingly to avoid a collision. The IIO investigation is now concluded.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
