For Immediate Release
Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC concludes investigation into an incident in Castlegar.
As indicated in the previous release, on June 12, 2021 at approximately 11:40 p.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop of an electric scooter that was being driven erratically in the 1400-block of Columbia Avenue. As the driver, a woman, had an outstanding warrant for her arrest, the officer advised that she would be taken into custody.
Statements provided to the IIO from both the woman and the subject officer confirm that the injury sustained by the woman was self-inflicted. The officer provided medical assistance and called Emergency Health Services who transported the woman to the hospital.
The CCD has reviewed the evidence and determined that the officer was acting appropriately in arresting the woman and his actions did not play a role in her injury. The IIO investigation is now concluded.
Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
