Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) has now completed its investigation into a motor vehicle incident that occurred in Kelowna on February 9, 2026.
Around 12:01 a.m., a Kelowna RCMP officer patrolling Highway 97 near Sexsmith Road observed a grey Ford F-150 pickup truck, with an incorrect license plate. The officer attempted a traffic stop and the F-150 reportedly slowed down but then drove away.
Shortly afterwards, the F-150 was involved in a collision near the intersection of Hwy 97 N and Commercial Drive with a white Mercedes Benz. The occupants of the F-150 left the scene on foot. They were later located by officers and arrested.
A woman who was one of the occupants in the Mercedes sustained an injury in the collision.
The IIO was notified and commenced an investigation.
The chief civilian director has now reviewed the medical evidence collected by IIO investigators and has determined that the woman’s injuries do not meet the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act.
The IIO investigation is now concluded.
Background
The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
