Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has now completed its investigation into a motor vehicle incident in Vancouver (IIO 2024-128) on June 7, 2024.

At around 1:30 a.m., officers with the Vancouver Police Department attempted to stop a stolen vehicle being driven by the affected person (AP).

A collision then took place around Cambie Street and 35 Avenue involving two VPD vehicles and the vehicle being driven by the AP.

The AP was then arrested following an interaction with police. A passenger in the vehicle being driven by the AP was not hurt.

The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and commenced an investigation.

The Interim Chief Civilian Director has now reviewed the evidence and determined the AP’s injuries do not meet the threshold of serious harm as defined in Part 11 of the Police Act.

The IIO investigation is now concluded.

Background

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
