Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has concluded investigation 2024-072 into the death of a man in Surrey.
On the afternoon of March 24, 2024, police were called to a residence in the neighbourhood of 159a Street and 37 Avenue due to a report of threats being made related to a dispute.
Local police units from both the RCMP and Surrey Police Service as well as the Emergency Response Team attended. Police negotiators were unsuccessful in contacting the affected person (AP), a man, who was the only person inside the building.
Officers initially established positions outside the residence but did not communicate directly with the AP. Following a period of no movement, officers entered the residence and located the AP who was deceased from self-inflicted gunshot injuries.
The IIO was notified of the death shortly after it occurred.
The IIO investigation found no evidence to support a link between police action or inaction and the AP’s decision to end his own life.
The IIO investigation is now concluded.
Background
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
