Surrey – The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. deployed to an incident in Victoria and was notified of an officer-related incident in Surrey over the weekend.

IIO 2018-122

Initial information provided to the IIO by the Victoria Police Department suggests that on September 29, 2018, at 2:17 a.m., officers attended the area of Songhees in Victoria after reports of a disturbance. At approximately 2:28 a.m. police located a female near the water.

Due to the circumstances of the incident a conducted energy weapon (CEW) was deployed in an effort to prevent self-harm. Officers administered immediate medical assistance and Emergency Health Services (EHS) attended. The female was transported to hospital with serious injuries unrelated to the use of the CEW and later died.

The IIO deployed investigators and investigation is ongoing.

IIO 2018-124

It is reported that at approximately 8:40 p.m., on September 29, 2018, Surrey RCMP responded to reports of a possibly impaired male who had struck a vehicle with an electric moped in a parking lot by the intersection of Whalley Blvd and 108th Avenue, Surrey.

Following a police altercation, the male was later taken to hospital with an ankle injury.

Background

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
