IIO Investigators Deployed to Smithers

SURREY – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) confirms that it is investigating an incident involving the Smithers RCMP.
Over a period of approximately 12 hours on September 9, RCMP officers in Smithers had multiple dealings with an adult male. After a medical assessment and subsequent period of time in police cells, the male affected person was released. Shortly thereafter, police responded to a call at a local business, where the adult male was found in need of medical attention. He was transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
The IIO was notified at 6:17 p.m. on September 9 and after a preliminary assessment, deployed investigators to Smithers.
This incident occurred in a public setting. Any potential witnesses are asked to call the IIO Info line at 1-855-446-8477.
As set by the chief civilian director, the IIO’s goals are to conduct fair, unbiased, timely, thorough and competent investigations, and ensure transparency through public reporting.
Due to the preliminary stage of the investigation, no additional information is available at the present time.
