Surrey, B.C. – The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a death in Maple Ridge.
Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on January 10, 2021 at approximately 1:20 a.m., police were called to conduct a wellness check at a residence in the 27000-block of Lougheed Highway. When officers arrived, they reportedly found a man at the home to be arrestable for an offence and took him into custody.
Later that day, the man had a judicial hearing and was released at about 3:00 p.m. with specific conditions.
The following day (January 11) at about 3:00 p.m., the man was found deceased and the IIO was notified due to the recent police contact. The IIO will investigate to determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions may have played in the death.
