Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a motor vehicle incident in Chase which may have resulted in serious injuries to one man.

Information provided by the Kamloops RCMP indicates that on October 16, 2022, police received a call at approximately 8:30 a.m. from an individual concerned about an elderly man’s plans to commence a lengthy drive.

The man was subsequently involved in a collision with an oncoming vehicle on Highway 1 near Chase (approximately 70 kilometres away from Kamloops) at about 11:40 a.m. The man sustained injuries in the collision that may meet the threshold for serious harm as defined by the Police Act. He was airlifted to the hospital for treatment.

The occupants of the other vehicle are reported to have sustained only minor injuries.

The IIO has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions after receiving the initial call may have played in the collision.
