Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a collision in Richmond which resulted in serious injuries to one man.

Information provided by the RCMP indicates that on October 17, 2022, a marked police vehicle was involved in a multi-vehicle collision at Highway 91 and Westminster Highway.

Three male occupants of one of the vehicles were taken into custody, and it was later confirmed that one of the males had sustained a serious injury meeting the threshold for serious harm as defined by the Police Act. It is reported that none of the other vehicle occupants was seriously hurt.

The IIO has commenced an investigation.

Background

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
