Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a police-involved shooting incident that occurred in Penticton on October 22. 2024.
Information provided by the RCMP states that at around 3:15 p.m., officers from the Penticton detachment responded to a call about a man acting erratically, and possibly holding a weapon, on Government Street near the Penticton Regional Hospital.
After arriving, police attempted to arrest the man, leading to an interaction with one officer. The officer suffered an injury during the interaction and discharged their firearm, leaving the man with a gunshot injury.
The man was provided first aid at the scene and taken to the hospital where he later died.
The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and has commenced an investigation. Initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details leading up to the incident, and if the force used by police was necessary, reasonable, and proportionate in the circumstances.
