Surrey, B.C. — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a police-involved shooting incident on Victoria Road East in Revelstoke that resulted in the death of one person on August 27, 2023.

Information provided by the RCMP states that around 11:48 p.m., police responded to a call involving a stolen vehicle.

Officers then encountered the Affected Person (AP) in a vehicle, there was an interaction, and shots were fired by police. Emergency Health Services (EHS) attended but the AP was later pronounced deceased.

The IIO was notified around 12:10 a.m. on August 28 and has commenced an investigation. Initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details of what occurred leading up to and during the interaction with police, and what role the officer’s actions or inaction may have played in the person’s death.

Background

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
